In May 1945, the American Bomb Squadron was on striking missions against Celebes and Borneo, which was under Japanese occupation. The aircraft suffered engine failure on one of these missions and caught fire. It wasn’t until two hours after successfully landing on a sea surface that this aircraft sank.
Lies 18 meters below the surface, this 17-meter-long aircraft is in excellent condition as none of the artefacts has been removed. After decades, the wreck has become a favorite spot for big-eye trevallies, jacks, lionfish, various shrimps, glassfish, crocodile fish, and batfish to congregate. The aircraft’s rear is covered in green tube and barrel sponges, while purple and yellow sea squirts and blue tunicates adorned the main wings.
